Ukraine’s SBU dismantles large Russian FSB spy network
Ukrainian Security Service (SBU) has dismantled a Russian FSB network operating in the Odesa, Zaporizhzhia, and Donetsk oblasts during a special operation, the SBU press service reported on their Telegram channel on Feb. 5.
The spies face life in prison.
The detainees include an engineer from a defense plant, a municipal official in Donetsk Oblast, a former municipal enterprise head, a Kramatorsk resident, an engineer-technologist from a defense enterprise in Zaporizhzhia, and a transportation company official in Odesa.
The criminals conducted reconnaissance of frontline areas to identify locations with the highest concentration of Ukrainian military personnel and equipment, as well as warehouses containing ammunition and fuel.
The agents acted independently but reported to an FSB handler. His identity is already known, the SBU said.
The FSB sought information on the locations and operational details of Ukrainian facilities that repair heavy weaponry. Russian "assistants" also gathered intelligence on the aftermath of enemy air strikes and coordinated locations for new Russian missile strikes.
The SBU reported that all of the suspects were active members of pro-Russian groups on messaging apps. This activity drew the attention of the Russian FSB, which recruited them for collaboration.
