Ukraine simplifies residence permits for foreign volunteers

The Ukrainian government has simplified the process for foreign
nationals who serve or plan to serve in the Armed Forces of Ukraine to
obtain temporary residence permits, Prime Minister Yuliia Svyrydenko said on May
7.
Under the new procedures, permits will be issued for the duration of a service contract and for six months after the contract ends, Svyrydenko said. The government is also setting up expedited processing for related documents.
The changes address people who cannot renew passports because doing so would require contacting an aggressor state or a country that does not recognize Ukraine’s territorial integrity. In such cases, applicants will be allowed to submit documents even with an expired passport, Svyrydenko said.
The government has eased requirements for proving residence for foreign nationals in the military.
“This decision should remove unnecessary bureaucracy and create clearer and more normal conditions in Ukraine for people who are defending our state,” Svyrydenko said.
Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko said the procedure applies to people already serving in the National Guard, the Armed Forces, or the State Border Guard Service. He said the obligation to declare a place of residence has been removed because their address is now where they perform combat duties.
“Supporting those who stand shoulder to shoulder with us to
defend Ukraine is our duty and responsibility,” he wrote in a Telegram post.
