Ukraine steps up railroad security as sabotage threat grows
Ukrainian Railways (UZ) is ramping up security measures at railway stations and along tracks in response to repeated attempts by Russian agents to sabotage the national rail network, UZ Chairman Oleksandr Pertsovskyi said on June 6.
In a Facebook post, Pertsovskyi noted Mocow’s propaganda machine is broadcasting threats to cripple the Ukrainian rail network after two rail bridges in western Russia collapsed last week.
“These are not idle threats; it [enemy sabotage] has been our daily reality for more than three years,” Pertsovskyi said.
In recent weeks, railway workers have increasingly discovered specialized devices designed to derail trains. Last week, train crews found suspicious objects and stray camera equipment mounted on rail tracks on two separate occasions. Since the equipment was spotted in time, accidents were avoided.
“We believe it is important to be transparent about the risks,” Pertsovskyi added.
“We are taking a range of measures to minimize these threats.”
He advised passengers to arrive at stations 20 to 30 minutes before departure, remain alert to suspicious individuals or objects, and prepare for potential delays or additional checks as heightened security measures take effect.
Pertsovskyi added that since the full-scale war began in 2022, Ukraine’s railway infrastructure has been attacked more than 3,700 times, with signs of sabotage recorded in over 300 incidents.
He reiterated the importance of a functional rail system in keeping the country running as air travel has been made impossible due to military risks.
Earlier on June 6, Russia’s drone and missile attack struck a section of rail near Kyiv, although the damage was repaired by the end of the day.
