Ukraine strikes back at Russian unit responsible for Sumy deaths
Ukrainian forces struck a Russian missile brigade base in Kursk linked to a deadly Palm Sunday attack on Sumy, Ukraine’s military said on April 15.
Ukrainian forces carried out a coordinated drone strike on military targets in Russia’s Kursk Oblast, targeting units linked to a recent missile attack that killed dozens in the Ukrainian city of Sumy.
The operation involved the Ukrainian Forces of Unmanned Systems, Special Operations Forces, and the Security Service of Ukraine, in cooperation with other defense units. One of the primary targets was the permanent base of Russia’s 448th Missile Brigade. The Ukrainian military reported secondary explosions from ammunition at the site.
“These units and individual servicemembers involved in attacks on peaceful Ukrainian cities will be identified and will face retribution,” the General Staff said in a statement, adding that strikes on key Russian military sites would continue until the invasion ends.
Palm Sunday strike on Sumy
On April 13, Russia launched a missile strike on downtown Sumy using two Iskander ballistic missiles, killing 35 people — including two children — and injuring about 120 others, according to Ukraine’s State Emergency Service.
One missile hit a university building; the other exploded midair over a street, killing the driver and nearly all passengers aboard a trolleybus.
The head of Ukraine’s State Emergency Service, Kyrylo Budanov, said the attack was carried out by missile crews from Russia’s 112th and 448th brigades, stationed in the Voronezh and Kursk oblasts.
