Ukraine welcomes U.S.-Iran ceasefire, urges resolve against Russia

Ukraine welcomes the agreement between U.S. President Donald Trump and Iran on a two-week ceasefire and reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, and believes it is time to show similar resolve toward Russia to force it to end its war against Ukraine, Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said on X on April 8.
“We welcome the agreement between President Trump and the Iranian regime to unblock the Hormuz strait and cease fire, as well as Pakistan’s mediation efforts. American decisiveness works,” he wrote.
The Ukrainian diplomat added that “it is time for sufficient decisiveness” to compel Russia to cease fire and end the war against Ukraine.
Trump announced overnight into April 8 that he agreed to suspend U.S. bombing of Iran for two weeks on the condition of the immediate, complete and safe opening of the Strait of Hormuz. He said the United States had already “met and exceeded all military objectives” and made significant progress toward a final peace agreement.
Iran’s Supreme National Security Council later confirmed the two-week ceasefire with the United States. Israel also agreed to pause its strikes during the talks.
Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif invited delegations from Iran and the United States to Islamabad for further negotiations.
The announcement followed Trump’s earlier threats that the United States could “take Iran out in one night” and bomb all its bridges and power plants if demands were not met. His ultimatum expired at 8 p.m. ET on April 7.
