The United States has decided to transfer 31 M1-A1 Abrams tanks to Ukraine – instead of the previously planned newer M1-A2 models, Pentagon spokesperson Gen. Pat Ryder said at a press conference on March 21, as reported by CNN.

According to Ryder, the switch was made to allow for a more rapid delivery schedule, as Ukraine needs modern Western tanks sooner rather than later.

“After further study and analysis on how best to do this, DoD in close coordination with Ukraine has made the decision to provide the M1-A1 variant of the Abrams tank, which will enable us to submit significantly expedite delivery timelines and deliver this important capability to Ukraine by the fall of this year,” Ryder said.

He added that Washington will also provide Ukraine with "advanced armor and weapons systems."

Earlier on March 21, White House National Security spokesman John Kirby said that both Abrams main battle tanks and Patriot air defense systems will be transferred to Ukraine sooner than initially expected.
