Attempting to cross into Romania from Zakarpattya Oblast, three men assaulted a Ukrainian border guard and seized his weapon, State Border Guard Service spokesperson Andrii Demchenko said on Aug. 16.

Other Ukrainian border guards detained one of the assailants, while Romanian police apprehended the other two across the international border.

“Today, a group of violators attacked one of the soldiers who was part of a border patrol in Zakarpattya,” Demchenko told NV’s sister publication Ukrainska Pravda.

“The three violators were intercepted while trying to illegally cross the border into Romania.”

According to him, the assailants attacked the soldier, took his weapon, and fled "towards the neighboring country."

Ukrainian border guards detained one of the violators near the incident site as he tried to scale engineering barriers to cross the border. The detainee turned out to be a resident of Zakarpattya.

Romanian police detained a Ukrainian citizen near the border, who later indicated the location where the stolen weapon was left on Romanian territory. Later, the authorities apprehended another fugitive.

The military war may be swinging in our favor, but the information war continues.

Just as an army needs soldiers, so does a free society need its journalists to ensure that people have access to honest, trustworthy voices to understand the world around them.

For the past five years, The New Voice of Ukraine has been working tirelessly to push back against Russian narratives and defend democracy. But we cannot do it alone.
