Two Ukrainian NPPs remain at reduced capacity after Russian attacks—IAEA

Of the three operational Ukrainian nuclear power plants, two have been operating at reduced capacity for the past 10 days after a Russian attack disabled substations in western Ukraine, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said on Nov. 17.
Quoted in a statement on IAEA’s website, agency head Rafael Grossi said Khmelnytskyi and Rivne NPPs were disconnected from one of their two 750kV transmission lines when Russian missiles struck the substation. Grid operators followed with orders to lower output at three reactors to maintain safety margins.
“Reliable off-site power is vital for the maintenance and operation of nuclear safety functions,” said Grossi.
“To this end, Agency experts will, through dedicated expert missions, continue to assess the functionality of substations critical for nuclear safety and security.”
