Umerov remains the only candidate to replace Markarova
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is considering Defense Minister Rustem Umerov as the primary, and currently only, candidate to serve as Ukraine’s new ambassador to the United States, Suspilne public broadcaster reported on July 11, citing a source in Zelenskyy’s administration.
The source noted that if Umerov is confirmed, several high-ranking officials remain under consideration to replace him at the Defense Ministry. Among them are PM Denys Shmyhal, Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko, and Digital Transformation Minister Mykhailo Fedorov. Subsequent Cabinet appointments will depend on who is tapped to succeed Umerov.
On July 10, Zelenskyy said that Ukraine’s current ambassador to the United States, Oksana Markarova, would be replaced.
On July 8, Suspilne reported that Zelenskyy had informed Markarova of his intent to dismiss her, though he offered her a role on his team. The president discussed her replacement during a July 4 phone call with U.S. President Donald Trump. Markarova was previously criticized by some of Trump’s political allies as being a figure too close to the previous, Democratic, administration.
