UN Security Council to hold urgent meeting today on Russia’s strikes against Ukraine
The U.N. Security Council will hold an emergency meeting at 10 p.m. Kyiv time at Ukraine’s request, Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha said on X on Aug. 29.
The meeting comes in response to a new wave of massive Russian missile and drone strikes on Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities, which caused numerous civilian casualties, including children.
Ukraine is urging Security Council members to use the session to show support for the country under Russian terror and to step up pressure on the aggressor.
“Only pressure, including new tough sanctions, can force Moscow to stop imitating diplomacy and make real efforts to end the war,” Deputy Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha said.
Massive attack on Kyiv, Aug. 28
In the early hours of Thursday, Aug. 28, Kyiv came under a large-scale assault by Russian forces, who launched Shaheds, Gerans, cruise missiles, and ballistic missiles, including Kinzhals.
A series of powerful explosions rocked the city, with damage recorded at more than 30 sites. About 225 buildings were damaged, and in the Darnytskyi district, an apartment block entrance was destroyed. At least 23 people were killed, including four children.
Kyiv Mayor Vitaliy Klitschko said the Aug. 28 overnight strike was one of the largest in recent months. Despite the work of air defenses, several Russian missiles and drones struck residential buildings.
Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha said the attack damaged the European Union representation in Kyiv as well as the British Council office.
Destruction was reported across all districts of the capital, including damage to the offices of Ukrainska Pravda, Radio Liberty, the Intercity train depot, and other sites.
The military war may be swinging in our favor, but the information war continues.
