Senate committee clears $500 million in Ukraine aid for 2026
U.S. Senate Armed Services Committee approved a provision allocating $500 million in security assistance to Ukraine as part of the proposed FY2026 defense budget, Reuters reported on July 11.
Twenty-six members of the bipartisan committee supported the measure while one voted against it.
The National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) bill would provide a total of $925 billion for U.S. national security needs, with $878.7 billion designated for Pentagon spending and $35.2 billion for the Department of Energy, which oversees the U.S. nuclear weapons program.
In addition, the bill would extend the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative through 2028 and boost its funding from $300 million to $500 million. The NDAA version passed by the House of Representatives has kept Ukraine aid at $300 million.
On July 10, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Kyiv had received “political signals” suggesting that U.S. military would be resumed after it was abruptly halted last week.
Meanwhile, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the pause in shipments of some weapons to Ukraine was a temporary, technical measure that does not affect most U.S. military aid.
