US blasts China’s Ukraine war ‘peace plan’
Beijing’s proposals to end the war in Ukraine contradict the UN Charter and basic principles of international law, Robert Wood, the U.S. Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN, said on Sept. 13.
Wood delivered his remarks during a UN Security Council meeting, as reported by Ukrainian state news agency Ukrinform.
The diplomat stated that China’s six-point proposal for addressing the so-called "Ukrainian crisis" [China's term for Russia's 2022 invasion of Ukraine] does not complement Ukraine’s peace formula and fails to support Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
“China’s six-point plan sets a dangerous precedent,” said Wood.
“We are not here to reward violators of the UN Charter.”
He insisted that the quickest path to peace for Russia involves withdrawing its troops from Ukraine and ending it bombing campaign.
Wood also noted that Beijing supports Russian aggression through its so-called "no-limits partnership" and extensive support for Russia's defense industry, which enables Moscow to continue its war in Ukraine.
He said that China supplies Russia with dual-use goods, including weapon components, equipment, and raw materials. These supplies include nitrocellulose, machine tools, microelectronics, optics, drones, and cruise missile technologies that Russia uses to attack civilians and destroy Ukraine’s infrastructure.
“How can China be a proponent of peace while enabling Russia to wage war?” Wood said.
Furthermore, he accused Beijing of helping Russia spread propaganda and disinformation about Ukraine, attempting to justify the war with narratives about Moscow’s "legitimate security concerns." The U.S. diplomat reiterated that "Russia’s actions in Ukraine have no legitimate justification."
The military war may be swinging in our favor, but the information war continues.
