US expands sanctions against Belarus
The U.S. Treasury Department announced on
Aug. 9 that it has expanded the list of Belarusian individuals and legal
entities that will be sanctioned.
According to the department's press service, these new sanctions were introduced on the third anniversary of the falsification of the presidential elections by the regime of dictator Alexander Lukashenko, as well as in response to its involvement in Russia's full-scale aggression against Ukraine.
The Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) within the U.S. Department of the Treasury reported that among those added to the list are the two sons and wife of businessman Alexey Alexin, who previously worked in civil service and is now a co-owner of the Belarusian logistics operator Bremino Group.
Subject to the restrictions is the Department of Financial Investigations of the State Control Committee of Belarus, Chief Inspector Artem Dunko, and three of his colleagues.
Also listed in the sanctions restrictions are the Director of the Belarusian Metallurgical Plant, the Belarusian state airline Belavia, the Minsk Civil Aviation Factory No. 407, and a Bombardier CRJ-200ER aircraft.
Belarusian investigative journalist Anton Motolko reported that Lukashenko's business jet, a Bombardier Challenger 850 with the registration number EW-301PJ, which is used by the Belarus dictator's two older sons, Victor and Dmitry Lukashenko, is now subject to current restrictions.
"Thereby, at the moment, all of Lukashenko's helicopters and planes, apart from one— a Boeing 767−300 with the registration number EW-001PB— are under U.S. sanctions," Motolko summed up.
