US may reconsider stance on Ukrainian strikes inside Russia
Washington is not prepared to risk U.S. national security to support Ukraine, as the U.S. may seek to restore relations with Moscow in the future, Politico reports.
Sources indicate that the White House and Pentagon continue to reject proposals to change U.S. policy on Ukraine’s use of American weapons, except for limited cases near Russia's border. Officials believe Ukraine already has the necessary resources for victory. However, a senior Ukrainian adviser suggested that President Biden might consider lifting some restrictions before the 2024 election, though this is not guaranteed.
Part of the ongoing discussion involves potentially allowing Ukraine to use British Storm Shadow missiles, which contain American components, for strikes inside Russia. The Biden administration must approve their use, but no formal request has been made yet, though consultations are underway. An administration official noted that Storm Shadow or Army Tactical Missile Systems might not be as effective as expected due to Ukraine’s limited missile inventory and their range limitations.
The U.S. currently permits the use of its long-range missiles inside Russia for defensive purposes, like counter-battery fire against Russian missile installations near the border. Some prominent Democrats in Congress have expressed openness to giving Ukraine more flexibility with American weapons.
