Vilnius summit will not bring Ukraine into NATO – Sullivan
Ukraine will not become a member of NATO
following the upcoming
summit in Vilnius, Lithuania, U.S. National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan
said at a press briefing on July 7.
“Ukraine will not become a member of NATO as a result of this summit,” the official said.
“We will discuss which steps should be taken instead."
Earlier on July 7, The Washington Post reported that NATO allies are still deliberating over what to offer Ukraine at the Vilnius summit, scheduled for July 11-12.
NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg previously stated that the members plan to ratify a long-term support package for Ukraine at the summit, which should bring the country closer to the Alliance. However, he clarified that there would be no formal invitation for Ukraine to join NATO at this summit.
Zelenskyy has previously urged U.S. President Joe Biden to extend an immediate invitation to Ukraine to join NATO. He acknowledged that Ukraine cannot join the Alliance during the ongoing war, but insisted that an invitation would serve as a significant signal.
