Warsaw sets aside $30 million for bomb shelters with an eye on aggressive Putin
Warsaw will invest 117 million zlotys ($28.9 million USD) to build bomb shelters and take other security measures, Mayor Rafał Trzaskowski announced, according to Politico.
This comes as Russian dictator Vladimir Putin boasts that he is "ready" for nuclear war.
A recent bomb shelter audit in Poland found that less than 4% of the population has access to shelters in the event of a bombardment.
Shelters also lack basic regulations, technical features, and equipment, the audit noted.
Underground parking lots and subway stations are among those places in the city that are proposed to be used as bomb shelters. 7 million square meters of space in Warsaw could be repurposed for shelters in total.
The new "Warsaw Protects" program would equip shelters with electricity and water.
Helping hospitals prepare for danger and training citizens how to react in emergencies is also part of the program, Trzaskowski said.
Bomb shelter construction is a part of Warsaw's short-term strategy aimed at “making the most significant investments that will allow us to prepare for any eventuality," the mayor said.
