Washington to help Ukraine secure its energy infrastructure against Russian attacks
The United States and 50 partner countries that make up the G7 Plus Energy Coordination Group are helping Ukraine secure its energy infrastructure against potential Russian attacks this winter, Voice of America reported on Nov. 30, citing White House National Security spokesman John Kirby.
The countries are jointly supplying Kyiv with essential energy equipment and supplies, including generators, substation infrastructure, and other protective measures.
"Russia tried to break the will of the Ukrainian people, but of course it failed; as we approach another winter, we expect Russia to return to these brutal tactics," Kirby said, adding that Russia's recent air strikes on Ukraine confirm such intentions.
On the eve of winter, U.S. President Joe Biden and White House National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan instructed the administration to prioritize efforts to prepare for Russian attacks on the energy infrastructure of Ukrainian cities.
The United States are undertaking the following initiatives:
· Strengthening Ukraine's air defense capabilities to shoot down Russian missiles and kamikaze drones aimed at critical infrastructure. In particular, this includes the Patriot, HAWK, and Avenger air defense systems provided in the recent aid package to Kyiv;
· Strengthening Ukraine's energy infrastructure by providing protective equipment, including nets and welded wire Hesco barriers to protect energy facilities. In addition, U.S. Defense Department and Energy Department experts are advising Ukrainian officials on the most effective use of this equipment;
· Providing Ukraine with backup equipment and supplies, including high-voltage transformers, industrial gas generators, and mobile autonomous equipment that will increase resilience and prevent total blackouts in the event of a destructive Russian strike.
In order for the United States to continue to provide Ukraine with air defense and other necessary equipment, Congress should approve additional funding as soon as possible, Kirby said.
The Ukrainian government, in cooperation with the General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, has adopted a three-step approach to strengthening the protection of energy infrastructure across the country, Ukriane’s Agency for the Restoration and Development of Infrastructure said on Facebook on Nov. 20.
On Nov. 18, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced plans to strengthen the country's air defenses in the coming weeks.
In October, he said Ukraine would respond symmetrically to any Russian attacks on Ukrainian energy infrastructure.
The military war may be swinging in our favor, but the information war continues.
Just as an army needs soldiers, so does a free society need its journalists to ensure that people have access to honest, trustworthy voices to understand the world around them.
For the past five years, The New Voice of Ukraine has been working tirelessly to push back against Russian narratives and defend democracy. But we cannot do it alone.
