Water pollution spikes in Chernihiv Oblast
Water quality in the Seim River in Chernihiv Oblast has deteriorated once again, Ukraine’s Environment Ministry reported on Sept. 24.
At the same time, the ministry noted that the water quality in the Desna River (of which Seim is a tributary) in Kyiv Oblast remains within acceptable norms.
“On Sept. 24, no pollution movement was detected in the Kyiv region,” the message said.
“The water quality in the Desna River at water intake sites in Kyiv and Brovary is within acceptable norms.”
No hazardous increases in pesticide, polyaromatic hydrocarbon, volatile organic compounds, or heavy metal levels have been detected. Additionally, no fish die-offs have been reported.
At the same time, the Seim River in the Sumy region shows the presence of pollution, though the ministry notes it is less severe than the previous occurrence weeks earlier.
Water sample measurements from the Desna River in Chernihiv Oblast indicate that water quality has improved in all monitored points.
On Aug. 27, Ukrainian officials first reported a major pollution blot floating down the Seim River, having seemingly originated in Russia’s Kursk Oblast. Given that Seim is a tributary of Desna, this raised concerns about water quality in Kyiv, since the capital gets much of its fresh water from the river.
Dangerous pollution levels were never detected in Kyiv itself, although city authorities warned that water intakes may need to be adjusted in the future if the pollution in Desna keeps spreading.
