Weapons cache found near Berlin was created for Russian intelligence

German intelligence services found a weapons and ammunition cache in a forest near Berlin last year, raising concerns that Russian intelligence agents may have been planning attacks in Germany, Spiegel reported on Aug. 21.
Police specialists rendered the weapons unusable and returned them to the cache. The site remained under surveillance for several months, but no one came to retrieve the weapons.
The Karlsruhe Public Prosecutor General’s Office is investigating the case. Proceedings were opened on suspicion of “preparing a serious violent offense endangering the state.”
German security authorities have evidence that the cache was created on behalf of Russian intelligence services. One suspect was detained in Romania.
Germany’s Federal Prosecutor’s Office declined to comment, according to the report.
On Aug. 5, German newspaper Die Zeit reported that Russian intelligence services had been preparing to assassinate Stefan Thumann, head of Donaustahl, a company that manufactures drones.
The newspaper said Thumann’s case was not the only one raising concerns among security services. They warned that Germany was facing a “new level of escalation by Russia.”
According to Die Zeit, another German arms manufacturer may also be a target of Russian intelligence services.
On Aug. 19, Bild reported that Stefan Thumann, head of German arms manufacturer Donaustahl, which supplies combat drones to Ukraine, was allegedly targeted for assassination using the Novichok nerve agent.
