U.S. cuts weapons deliveries to Ukraine
The United States has halted some weapons shipments to Ukraine amid ongoing Russian aggression, White House Deputy Spokesperson Anna Kelly told CBS New on July 1.
The move is due to concerns that U.S. military stockpiles are falling too low.
The "decision was made to put America's interests first following" a Defense Department "review of our nation's military support and assistance to other countries across the globe," Kelly said without specifying which weapons had been pulled from delivery or the scale of the pullback.
In a separate statement on the same day, Elbridge Colby, the Department of Defense's Under Secretary of Policy, said that the "Department of Defense continues to provide the President with robust options to continue military aid to Ukraine, consistent with his goal of bringing this tragic war to an end. At the same time, the Department is rigorously examining and adapting its approach to achieving this objective while also preserving U.S. forces' readiness for Administration defense priorities."
The halt of deliveries from the U.S. is a blow to Ukraine as Russia has recently launched one of its biggest aerial attack campaigns of the war.
On Feb. 2, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that Ukraine had received only $76 billion of the $177 billion in aid approved by the United States.
Earlier, on Jan. 15, he said that about 33-34% of the weapons used on the battlefield are produced in Ukraine, more than 30% come from Europe, and 40% are supplied by the United States.
The military war may be swinging in our favor, but the information war continues.
