U.S. State Department lauds Ukraine’s successes, says UA will emerge ‘strong & independent’
Ukraine will resist the Russian aggression and emerge from the war an independent and strong nation with a Western orientation, The U.S. State Department said at a briefing on Jan. 4.
The notion that the war was turning in Russia’s favor was dismissed by State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller.
"No, I wouldn't say that at all. I think people often forget about the real stakes in this war and what Vladimir Putin's true intentions were, and what Ukraine has achieved and continues to achieve," he said.
Miller pointed to Putin's original goal of total conquest, of wanting to capture the whole Ukraine and absorb it into Russia. He acknowledged that Ukraine’s successful resistance is now widely recognized, but noted that this wasn't the case at the beginning of the full-scale invasion.
Miller said Ukraine's establishment of its own grain corridor in the Black Sea is a significant achievement.
While acknowledging that territory changes hands on the battlefield, Miller said that the central goal of Russian aggression, the complete absorption of Ukraine, is not being realized.
"If you look at the ultimate goal of this war, it is quite obvious that Ukraine will emerge from it independent, strong, with an improved economy and a Western orientation, while Russia wanted Ukraine not only to look east but to be part of Russia," he explained.
Miller outlined the U.S. goal of supporting Ukraine's self-sufficiency in producing and procuring weapons in the same briefing.
