Fire at Zaporizhzhya NPP extinguished, radiation levels stable - Dnipropetrovsk Oblast officials

The fire at the Zaporizhzhya NPP, sparked by Russian occupiers the previous day, has been extinguished, Dnipropetrovsk Oblast Military Administration head Serhiy Lysak reported on Aug. 12.

The radiation level near city of Nikopol, located right across the power plant, is normal, he said.

Ukraine recorded fire on the territory of the Zaporizhzhya NPP in Nikopol, the Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on the evening of Aug. 11.

No changes in the radiation state were recorded in the Zaporizhzhya NPP area as of 10:30 p.m., and no man-made radionuclides were detected, Ukraine's Interior Minister, Ihor Klymenko, reported.

The Russians set fire to a large number of automobile tires in the cooling towers of the ZNPP, Nikopol District Military Administration head, Yevhen Yevtushenko said, citing the "sources from the opposite bank."

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) confirmed the fire after a series of "multiple explosions". 

Negligence or deliberate arson may be behind the fire, Energoatom said.
