‘We already have a death zone’: Zelenskyy calls buffer zone plan for Ukraine ‘big mistake’
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the so-called buffer
zone in Ukraine already exists, and any equipment that enters it is destroyed.
He made the remarks in an interview with ABC, published by his
office on Sept. 9.
“I’ll tell you about the buffer zone. This is a big mistake.
We already have a buffer zone. I’m trying to explain this to all these experts
and so on,” Zelenskyy said when asked how he envisions a US-backed “buffer
zone.”
The president added, “This is a new war.”
“Today we have drone lines. Unfortunately, but it’s true,
not only us — the Russians too. They’re doing the same thing we are,” Zelenskyy
said.
He explained that drones wipe out everything that enters the
so-called “death zone.”
“These lines, the drone lines… We have a death zone from 10
kilometers to 20 kilometers. Different places, different points between us. So
any tank, armored vehicle, motorcycle, anything that comes into this
10-kilometer zone — everything burns. Everything is destroyed by drones,”
Zelenskyy stressed.
Therefore, he said, the “buffer zone” is already in place.
“If they’re talking about a buffer zone between us — that’s
nothing today,” he added.
On Aug. 28, Politico, citing European diplomats, reported
that European leaders are considering creating a 40-kilometer buffer zone along
the front line as part of a potential peace deal between Ukraine and Russia.
On Aug. 29, Zelenskyy said only those who don’t understand
the current technological state of the war are suggesting such a measure.
“Only those who don’t understand the state of the war today,
its technological state, propose a buffer zone of 40, 50, 60, I even heard 100
kilometers. This is a completely different story. Today heavy weapons are
already kept 10 plus kilometers apart because everything is struck by drones.
This buffer zone, I call it a ‘death zone,’ some call it a ‘gray zone’ — it
already exists,” he said.
The military war may be swinging in our favor, but the information war continues.
