Zelenskyy halts draft deferments, orders review — report
After learning that 1.5 million draft-eligible Ukrainians were granted mobilization deferments as employees of “critical enterprises,” President Volodymyr Zelenskyy suspended future deferment applications until Nov. 15, Ukrainska Pravda reported on Oct. 9.
Citing a government memo, the journalists wrote that Zelenskyy was reportedly dissatisfied with how many Ukrainian companies were able to shield their employees from getting mobilized into military service.
“The president attended the meeting… he was incensed that 1.5 million [men] were granted deferments,” a government source told the journalists.
Zelenskyy then ordered an audit of the list of “critically important enterprises,” employees of which are exempt from draft. Additionally, the Economy and Defense ministries are tasked with drafting a bill to reassess the rationale behind these deferrals.
“Suspended until Nov. 15 — provisions regarding criteria and procedures for determining enterprises, institutions, and organizations that are critically important for the national economy,” the memo reads.
