Zelenskyy urges US to be ‘pragmatic’ and avoid siding with Putin
Following an exceptionally cynical and misleading verbal attack by U.S. President Donald Trump, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy urged the West to unite in “pragmatism” and defend its values against Russian attempts at corrosion.
In a video address on Feb. 19, Zelenskyy reported on the progress of U.S. special envoy Keith Kellogg’s visit to Kyiv.
“Politically, there were many meetings and briefings today: army command, intelligence, ministers — all in preparation for talks with the U.S. President’s representative,” said the president.
“General Kellogg is already in Kyiv. He met with Commander-in-Chief [Oleksandr] Syrskyi, our intelligence and special service leaders, and the head of the [president’s] office [Andriy Yermak].”
Zelenskyy confirmed he’s going to meet with Kellogg on Feb. 20, expressing hope that the talks will be “constructive.”
“Together with America and Europe, peace can be more reliable, and that is our goal,” he added.
“I am confident we will conclude it [the war] with a reliable peace, and in such a way that Russia cannot come to Ukraine again, so Ukrainians can return from Russian captivity and Ukraine can have a future.”
The president finished his address with a call for European unity and U.S. “pragmatism.”
“I rely on Ukrainian unity, on our courage, on our relationships with partners, on our unity with Europe, and on America’s pragmatism — America that, like us all, needs success,” Zelenskyy said.
“Success unites. Our unity is our best defense for the future. A future not with Putin but with peace. This is a choice for everyone in the world — even for the strongest — to stand with Putin or with peace. The choice should be peace. Thank you all for your support.”
The military war may be swinging in our favor, but the information war continues.
Just as an army needs soldiers, so does a free society need its journalists to ensure that people have access to honest, trustworthy voices to understand the world around them.
For the past five years, The New Voice of Ukraine has been working tirelessly to push back against Russian narratives and defend democracy. But we cannot do it alone.
