Russian occupation forces have kept the Zaporizhzhya Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) operating on emergency diesel generators for a second day after cutting its only connection to the Ukrainian power grid, Ukraine’s state nuclear operator Energoatom said on Sept. 25.
“The occupied Zaporizhzhya plant has been forced to run on diesel generators for a second consecutive day due to the loss of external power,” Energoatom said in a statement.
“This creates a critical situation that threatens not only Ukraine’s nuclear safety but that of all Europe.”
Ukrenergo, the national grid operator, said the transmission line on Ukrainian-controlled territory remains intact and there are no technical problems preventing its use. Energoatom accused Russian forces of deliberately refusing to reconnect the plant to the grid while waging a “blatant disinformation campaign” against Ukraine.
“The occupiers are consciously endangering millions of people across the continent,” the agency said. It warned that the diesel generators are intended only for emergency use and cannot sustain the plant indefinitely. Their failure, Energoatom added, could lead to a loss of control over the facility’s nuclear safety.
Energoatom urged the international community to increase pressure on Russia to return the power station to Ukrainian control.
The military war may be swinging in our favor, but the information war continues.
Just as an army needs soldiers, so does a free society need its journalists to ensure that people have access to honest, trustworthy voices to understand the world around them.
For the past five years, The New Voice of Ukraine has been working tirelessly to push back against Russian narratives and defend democracy. But we cannot do it alone.
