Dense smog blanketed Kyiv following an overnight Russian missile and drone attack, according to videos published by several Telegram channels, including Kyiv Info on Sept. 30.
Ukraine’s State Emergency Service said residual smoke and soot had risen into the upper layers of the atmosphere, while an anticyclone was temporarily trapping them near the ground, creating dense fog. There is currently almost no wind to disperse the polluted air, but rescuers said conditions should gradually improve once the wind picks up and the sun comes out.
The State Emergency Service advised residents to:
- Keep windows and vents closed, especially in Podil, Lukianivka, the Shevchenkivskyi district and Borshchahivka.
- Avoid airing out homes.
- Use an air purifier, if available, or wet-clean indoor surfaces.
- Use fog lights and maintain a safe following distance while driving.
Overnight on Sept. 30, Russian forces launched a large-scale drone and missile attack on Kyiv Oblast. A child’s body was found under rubble in Vyshhorod, while three other people were injured. Infrastructure facilities in several districts of Oblast were targeted.
In Vyshhorod, rescuers pulled three people from the rubble. A child suffered an acute stress reaction, a man sustained shrapnel wounds to the head, and a woman suffered a leg injury.
Russia also attacked Kyiv overnight on Sept. 30 with ballistic missiles and drones. Strikes were reported in several districts. Two people have been killed and four others injured in the capital in the attack.
The military war may be swinging in our favor, but the information war continues.
Just as an army needs soldiers, so does a free society need its journalists to ensure that people have access to honest, trustworthy voices to understand the world around them.
For the past five years, The New Voice of Ukraine has been working tirelessly to push back against Russian narratives and defend democracy. But we cannot do it alone.
