Durable peace achievable this year, Zelenskyy says
Establishing a stable peace in Ukraine is possible in 2025, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said after a conversation with U.S. President Donald Trump on March 19.
“I had a positive, substantive and candid conversation with President Trump,” Zelenskyy wrote in a Twitter post.
“We agreed that Ukraine and the United States must continue working together to achieve a genuine ceasefire and lasting peace. We believe that, together with America and under President Trump’s leadership, enduring peace can be reached later this year.”
He noted that one of the first steps toward ending the war could be halting strikes on energy infrastructure and other civilian targets—a step he made clear Ukraine supports.
“U.S. officials also proposed an unconditional ceasefire along the front, and Ukraine accepted that proposal,” he said.
“We will continue working to make it happen.”
Zelensky also briefed Trump on the battlefield situation and the impact of Russian attacks on Ukrainian cities.
The two leaders discussed the situation in Russia’s Kursk Oblast, POW exchanges, the return of abducted Ukrainian children from Russia, and steps to strengthen Ukraine’s air defenses.
“Ukrainian and U.S. teams are set to meet in Saudi Arabia in the coming days to further coordinate steps toward peace,” the Ukrainian president said.
“We have instructed our advisors and representatives to work on this as quickly as possible. In upcoming meetings, our teams may iron out all the necessary details to move forward toward lasting peace and security guarantees.”
Finally, Zelenskyy thanked Trump and the American people for their support and reiterated that Ukrainians are eager for peace.
The call lasted nearly an hour, and afterwards, Trump said that his conversation with Zelensky was “very good.”
