European powers mull new Russia sanctions
Foreign ministers of Ukraine’s key European partners are weighing new sanctions against Russia to force a ceasefire, Reuters reported on March 31.
At a meeting of the group known as the G5+ or Weimar+ in Madrid, diplomats from Spain, Germany, France, Italy, UK, and Poland — along with the EU’s high representative for foreign policy, Kaja Kallas — issued a joint statement urging Russia to agree to an “immediate and unconditional cease-fire on equal terms and full compliance.”
The group also said it would increase military, political, and humanitarian assistance to Ukraine, although no further details were provided.
The communique stated that the allies are prepared to adopt new sanctions against Moscow, in order to ensure Ukraine is in the “best possible position to secure a just and lasting peace.”
Finally, the group reiterated the need for “credible” post-war security guarantees for Kyiv.
“We stand ready to play a leading role in this regard,” the statement said.
The military war may be swinging in our favor, but the information war continues.
