An explosion was heard in the city of Dnipro amid threats of guided bomb strikes (KAB bombs) in Dnipropetrovsk Oblast on June 28.

1:00 p.m. ET — Serhiy Lysak, head of the Dnipropetrovsk regional military administration, confirmed that the explosion heard in the suburbs of Dnipro was caused by Ukrainian air defense. He said the military shot down a Russian Grom-1 missile bomb.

12:52 p.m. ET — Suspilne, citing sources in the Ukrainian Air Force, reported a possible strike on Dnipro involving an experimental KAB missile.

“The standard range of the KAB is about 70 kilometers. Jet engines have been installed on them for some time, and they are constantly experimenting, trying to increase this range,” an Air Force source told Suspilne.

12:40 p.m. ET — The Ukrainian Air Force provided additional details on the earlier report of a “KAB attack.” According to military officials, at around 11:30 a.m. local time, an air target launched from a Russian tactical aircraft was detected over the temporarily occupied Zaporizhzhya Oblast. The target traveled over 100 kilometers before being shot down by air defense systems outside Dnipro.

The military emphasized that the type of air target will be confirmed after studying the wreckage.

The Ukrainian Air Force also issued a warning about the potential use of guided aerial bombs in the Dnipropetrovsk and Zaporizhzhya oblasts. An air alert was declared across several eastern and southern oblasts of Ukraine.

Monitoring channels reported that this was the first time during the war that the KAB missile flew nearly to Dnipro, with air defense forces successfully intercepting the threat.

On June 24, Russia launched ballistic missiles at Dnipro, causing the most extensive destruction the city has seen in the years of full-scale war. The attack resulted in 21 deaths and 340 injuries.

The military war may be swinging in our favor, but the information war continues.
