Moscow tells NATO to pull back from the Baltics to get peace in Ukraine
Russia would be more open to ending the war against Ukraine if NATO forces withdraw from the Baltic states, Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov claimed in a comment to state propaganda agency TASS on June 10.
Responsible for Russia’s relations with the United States, Ryabkov suggested that reducing the alliance’s presence in the region “will help put an end to the war.” He then reiterated the usual Kremlin talking point about the Russo–Ukrainian war being related to NATO’s post-Cold War expansion.
“Without resolving this key issue, it is simply impossible to settle the current conflict in the Euro-Atlantic region,” he said.
“The root of the conflict lies not only in Ukraine but also in NATO.”
On June 9, Ryabkov threatened that Russia could lift the moratorium on deploying intermediate-range nuclear missiles, in a direct threat to European nations.
Earlier on June 10, U.S.-based Institute for the Study of War (ISW) reported that Russia is preparing for a protracted conflict with NATO, with military operations against alliance countries potentially commencing by 2030.
