Ukraine now plays a key role in reshaping Europe’s security architecture and transforming NATO’s approach to defense, Lt. Gen. Krzysztof Krol, deputy chief of the Polish General Staff, said at the 18th Kyiv Security Forum on April 23.

Krol said Ukraine’s main achievement has been its ability to withstand the initial phase of Russia’s full‑scale invasion and to quickly adapt to new conditions of war.

“Russians are used to winning the first battle and then the war,” he said.

“Ukraine’s greatest achievement is that it absorbed the first strike and held firm. At the same time, Ukraine has created and developed a new military‑political culture that we now see as part of the country’s broader transformation.”

He added that those changes extend beyond the armed forces to include state governance and the system of national resilience. Ukraine, he said, has also demonstrated unprecedented development of modern capabilities — drones, satellite communications, around‑the‑clock intelligence collection, and high‑level data sharing.

“All of this is impressive; we see changes in legislation and in the development of national resilience as a whole,” Krol said.

“This concerns not only the military but the entire government. This adaptation has already become part of your defense base. In Poland and other NATO countries we are also trying to adopt these approaches.”

The military war may be swinging in our favor, but the information war continues.

Just as an army needs soldiers, so does a free society need its journalists to ensure that people have access to honest, trustworthy voices to understand the world around them.
