Putin demands Donetsk Oblast in exchange for ceasefire—report
Russian dictator Vladimir Putin has offered Washington to end hostilities in Ukraine in exchange for Kyiv ceding the entirety of Donetsk Oblast, The Wall Street Journal reported on Aug. 8, citing diplomatic sources.
The report says the proposal was delivered to U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff during his visit to Moscow on Aug. 6. European officials have already voiced serious reservations, noting that the plan would impose no obligations on Russia beyond an actual ceasefire, while Ukraine would have to forfeit a significant portion of its territory.
U.S. President Donald Trump has seemingly confirmed this, saying that Ukraine would have to give up some more of its territory under the ceasefire agreement currently being drafted by Moscow and Washington.
“We will get some back, and we will get some switched,” Trump said on Aug. 8.
“There will be some swapping of territories to the betterment of both [Ukraine and Russia].”
Kyiv has not yet issued an official response, but Ukrainian authorities have repeatedly said they will not agree to abandon their internationally recognized borders.
Earlier the same day, U.S. media reported that Trump and Putin could meet late next week to finalize the deal, with no apparent involvement of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
