Residents describe terrifying moments as drones strike Dnipro overnight
Russia launched a large-scale drone attack on Dnipro, according to eyewitnesses who described the strikes to Suspilne on April 16.
A resident of Dnipro described scenes of panic and destruction after a wave of Russian drone and mortar attacks hit the city late April 16, killing three people — including a child — and injuring 30 others.
“I counted ten explosions,” said one woman who lives near the strike site. “We were standing near the elevator. We heard the Shahed [drone] flying, then the explosion, people screaming. My hands are still shaking. It was terrifying. I don’t know who I was more scared for — myself or the children.”
She said she ran to the first floor of her building after receiving an alert on her phone, joining several neighbors in a shelter.
Another resident, Lyudmyla, said the windows in her apartment — which faces the direction of the blast — were shattered.
“Everything was destroyed. I was catching glass inside the apartment. The children were terrified,” she said. “Three windows are gone. I didn’t sleep at all that night.”
Local authorities said the strikes caused multiple fires across the city. Officials reported that a mortar nearly hit the Dnipro City Hall.
The attack damaged at least 15 buildings, including college dormitories, a university facility and a food processing business. Sixteen people remain hospitalized, one in critical condition.
