Russian night attacks cause power cuts in five Ukrainian oblasts

Russian invaders attacked energy infrastructure in several oblasts of Ukraine, leaving power outages reported by morning in Sumy, Odesa, Dnipropetrovsk, Kharkiv and Chernihiv oblasts, Ukraine’s first deputy energy minister, Artem Nekrasov, said at a briefing on Jan. 19.
He said the situation in Ukraine’s power system remains difficult, particularly in Kyiv and Kyiv Oblast, where severe cold temperatures are placing additional strain on the grid. Sixty repair crews are working to restore electricity in the capital, including 12 brought in from other oblasts.
There are no scheduled rolling outages in Kyiv and Kyiv Oblast. Grid restrictions also remain in Odesa Oblast, where emergency repair work is ongoing.
In several oblasts, emergency power outages are in effect on Monday due to equipment overloads, while other oblasts are experiencing scheduled rolling outages.
Overnight on Jan. 19, Russia struck energy facilities in Odesa Oblast, leaving more than 30,000 consumers in Odesa without electricity.
Russian forces also attacked energy infrastructure in Chernihiv Oblast, cutting power to hundreds of settlements.
On Jan. 14, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy declared a state of emergency in the energy sector after Russia’s massive strike on Jan. 9. A штаб was established to coordinate the energy situation in Kyiv and Kyiv Oblast around the clock.
