Russian air strikes hit Kyiv; explosions near Lviv

Hundreds of Russian Shahed drones attacked Kyiv shortly after midnight on Jan. 9, damaging critical infrastructure and numerous apartment buildings across the capital.
At 2:00 a.m., three ballistic missiles targeted the city. By 3:00 a.m., four waves of sea-launched Kalibr cruise missiles approached the city, timed to hit simultaneously with more ballistic missiles launched from Russia’s Bryansk Oblast. Municipal officials reported three fatalities from the attack and at least 10 people injured.
Air raid sirens sounded in Kyiv and parts of the Donetsk, Sumy, Chernihiv, Poltava, Cherkasy, Kirovohrad, and Zaporizhzhya oblasts beginning around 11:27 p.m. on Jan. 8. At the same time, several monitoring Telegram channels warned of a likely intermediate-range ballistic missile (IRBM) launch from Russia’s Kapustin Yar test range in Astrakhan Oblast. Minutes before midnight, locals reported a series of explosions in Lviv Oblast, consistent with the effect from Russia’s November 2024 Oreshnik IRBM strike on Dnipro.
In Kyiv’s Desnianskyi, Shevchenkivskyi, Dniprovskyi, Pecherskyi, and Obolon districts, enemy drones and their debris have struck apartment blocks and other buildings, igniting fires. In Pecherskyi District, cars parked outside also caught fire.
On Jan. 8, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and the U.S. Embassy in Ukraine warned of a likely major Russian drone-and-missile strike being planned, urging civilians to heed air raid warnings and prepare for possible power outages.
