Russian troops have increased pressure on Ukrainian positions near Kupiansk, Kharkiv Oblast, attempting to push forward with light infantry, 43rd Mechanized Brigade officer Artur Martirosyan told Suspilne public broadcaster on March 23.

“There have been no radical changes on the Kupiansk front, but we are seeing an increase in assaults,” Martirosyan said.

“Motorcycles and ATVs are appearing again. This week, if I’m not mistaken, there was already a second attempt to assault toward Kupiansk.”

He said this kind of activity had not been seen previously on this section of the front. Ukrainian forces expect even more assaults once trees leaf out, providing more cover to small infantry groups attempting infiltration.

On March 19, military spokesman Viktor Tregubov told Suspilne there was no significant buildup of Russian troops or equipment in the Kupiansk area. He said Russian forces have been trying to reach Kupiansk from the east but “cannot get past the ‘kill zone.”
