Russian jet-powered Shahed attacks passenger train in Ukraine's Odesa Oblast

A Russian jet-powered drone struck the locomotive of the Zhytomyr-Odesa passenger train No. 147 in Ukraine's Odesa Oblast, Ukrzaliznytsia CEO Oleksandr Pertsovskyi said on Aug. 23.
“Ukrzaliznytsia’s monitoring team issued an evacuation warning in advance, and the train was urgently stopped between stations, so everyone is safe: the passengers, the train crew and the locomotive crew,” he said.
According to him, 593 passengers, including 15 children, were aboard the train.
Transportation is now being arranged to take the passengers to Odesa.
An air raid alert had earlier been issued in Odesa Oblast, with the Ukrainian Air Force warning of jet-powered drones in the area.
On Aug. 13, a Russian drone strike targeting a passenger train in Odesa Oblast killed the train driver and his assistant.
“Despite the threat, the locomotive crew continued operating the train so that 340 passengers could safely leave the cars. All passengers and the train crew were evacuated, and none were injured,” Ukrzaliznytsia said at the time.
The attack occurred in the Berezivka district of Odesa Oblast.
Russia regularly strikes Ukrzaliznytsia tracks, stations, depots and trains.
On Aug. 7, Ukrzaliznytsia said Russia had attacked railway infrastructure 41 times in the previous five days alone.
Six railway workers were killed and 17 others were injured in the attacks.
According to the company, 11 locomotives were damaged during that period. Passengers had to be evacuated from trains 350 times because of the threat of Russian strikes.
Beginning Aug. 27, Ukrzaliznytsia temporarily suspended ticket sales for certain services and routes.
