Russian forces attacked a university building in Kyiv with Shahed drones while about 160 students were sheltering inside, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Sept. 2.

"Today, Russian Shahed drones struck one of the universities in Kyiv, right during classes. Fortunately, the students were in a shelter, 160 students," the president said.

Zelenskyy also said Russian forces struck Odesa overnight. A residential building and city infrastructure were damaged, and five people, including a child, were injured. In Kherson, Russian forces struck a building used by emergency services and police. Thousands of people were left without electricity after a strike in Kharkiv Oblast, and there were also injuries. Air raid alerts continued in many oblasts because of the threat of jet-powered drones and aerial bombs, the president said.

"Unfortunately, there has been too little response from the world and its most influential leaders to this latest Russian escalation of strikes. When Russian-Iranian Shaheds carry out such round-the-clock terror in Europe, this cannot remain a problem for our country alone. Every such strike on Ukrainians, every use of Shaheds and other weapons against our cities and villages is effectively Russia practicing tactics that it is preparing for other countries and other peoples as well," Zelenskyy wrote.

Russian attack on Kyiv on Sept. 2

Air raid alerts were issued repeatedly in Kyiv and surrounding Oblast from the beginning of Sept. 2 because of the threat of Russian drones.

An explosion was heard in Kyiv, and the Kyiv City State Administration reported that air defenses were operating. Monitoring channels reported a Shahed drone over central Kyiv, near the Universytet metro station, the central railway station and Lukianivka.

A Russian drone struck a six-story residential building in Kyiv's Shevchenkivskyi district. During the morning Shahed attack on Kyiv, a fire broke out on the grounds of an educational institution in the Holosiivskyi district, while a medical facility was damaged in the Shevchenkivskyi district, according to the Kyiv City State Administration. Seven people were reported injured in Kyiv.

The military war may be swinging in our favor, but the information war continues.

Just as an army needs soldiers, so does a free society need its journalists to ensure that people have access to honest, trustworthy voices to understand the world around them.

For the past five years, The New Voice of Ukraine has been working tirelessly to push back against Russian narratives and defend democracy. But we cannot do it alone.
