Kyiv bookstore damaged in overnight Russian attack

Russian invaders launched a massive combined strike across Ukraine overnight on August 28, hitting Kyiv and damaging multiple sites, including the Readeat and KnigoLand bookstores, Ukrainian officials reported on Aug. 28.
Bookstores Readeat and KnigoLand in central Kyiv reported damage from the recent attack.
At Readeat, staff said the damage was minor – doors were broken, windows shattered, and dust covered books and furniture.
“This night, the enemy strike hit our Readeat bookstore-café on Antonovycha Street. We sustained damage — broken doors — but, most importantly, all staff are safe. The books were unharmed,” employees said.
“The damage was limited to broken windows. The bookstore, its equipment, and books are covered in dust and debris, which we will clean in the next few hours. We plan to reopen by 11 a.m. Condolences to those affected and to the families of the victims from last night. Thanks to the defense forces doing everything possible to protect us from worse consequences,” added the founder, Dmytro Feliksov.
The team is currently cleaning up and preparing to reopen. “We know for certain that our culture is important and unbreakable, no matter how the enemy tries to destroy it. Literature helps us endure difficult times. We are cleaning up and will soon continue serving our community. We are grateful to the defense forces who daily protect us, our skies, and our lives, allowing us to keep doing our work,” the bookstore said.
At KnigoLand windows were shattered, the interior damaged, and books ruined.
“Friends, today the enemy once again attacked humanity. Our KnigoLand bookstore on Olympiyska Street was hit by a shockwave last night: windows broken, premises damaged, and books ruined. We extend our sincere condolences to everyone affected last night. The bookstore remains open, so if you are looking for support, want to talk, or just sit in silence, we welcome you,” the store said.
Russian forces attacked Kyiv using Shahed drones, cruise and ballistic missiles, including Kinzhal missiles. The city experienced a series of powerful explosions, with damage reported at 20 locations and up to 100 buildings affected, including the destruction of an apartment entrance in the Darnytskyi district. As of noon, 12 people have been reported killed in the city.
