SBU detains two Russian agents in Odesa
Ukraine’s SBU security service arrested two Ukrainian citizens recruited by Russia’s FSB to help plan an air strike on a potassium nitrate depot at Odesa port, the SBU said on July 16.
According to the investigation, Russian handlers tasked the agents with checking whether flammable fertilizer compounds were stored at a transit warehouse. If confirmed, the Russian military intended to strike the facility with missiles.
The FSB had recruited a 29-year-old Odesa resident and his 56-year-old associate. The younger suspect secured a job as a laborer at the port and began tracking incoming cargo. Soon he discovered tanks filled with nitrate and immediately reported his findings to his Russian contacts, sending the depot’s exact coordinates.
Fortunately, the agent was detained in time to discover the planned attack and quickly relocate the chemicals to another site.
The accomplice was detained later. Investigators said she had driven the suspect to various “test tasks” for the FSB, including setting fire to the signaling infrastructure of railways in the region.
During searches, SBU agents discovered evidence linking the suspects to Russian intelligence and found a cache of grenades.
Both suspects are facing charges of treason under martial law, potentially getting sentenced to life imprisonment.
