The Freedom of Russia Legion destroyed six Gazprom gas distribution stations in Russia’s Moscow and Tver oblasts, causing more than $6 million in damage, the unit said in a press release on June 24.

The unit consists of Russian nationals who volunteered to fight for Ukraine and operates under Ukraine’s Defense Intelligence (HUR).

The message said the facilities were destroyed thanks to clandestine work by an operative inside Russia, in an operation called Fakel (Torch). The press release was accompanied by a video.

The legion said it views the Russian energy sector as a primary resource the Kremlin uses to finance the war in Ukraine and to sustain its repressive state apparatus. It said oil and gas export revenues have for years been used to fund the military, security forces, and to preserve the government’s political monopoly.

The statement said the information was released after the successful extraction of the operative from Russia and his subsequent enlistment into the unit.

The military war may be swinging in our favor, but the information war continues.

Just as an army needs soldiers, so does a free society need its journalists to ensure that people have access to honest, trustworthy voices to understand the world around them.

For the past five years, The New Voice of Ukraine has been working tirelessly to push back against Russian narratives and defend democracy. But we cannot do it alone.
