Two Su-35S
fighter jets collided over Russia’s Kursk Oblast, Kremlin-aligned Telegram
channel Fighterbomber reported on Sept. 7.
According to Fighterbomber, the aircraft were flying at altitude, not in immediate vicinity of an airfield, when they collided. The cause and detailed circumstances of the incident were not immediately clear.
Hours later, the same Telegram channel reported that one pilot was killed in the collision, with the other ejecting and sustaining injuries.
The Su-35S is a Russian fourth-generation multirole fighter
equipped with two engines featuring thrust-vectoring capability. The Russian
military uses Su-35S jets to provide cover for Su-34 strike aircraft, support
ground forces, intercept Ukrainian drones and missiles, and engage Ukrainian
air defense systems.
