Ceasefire in Ukraine would heighten Russia’s threat to Europe, Rutte says
If there is a ceasefire in the Russo–Ukrainian war, Moscow will replenish its arms stockpiles, thereby becoming an even greater threat to European countries, NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte warned on June 9.
Speaking at Chatham House, Rutte stated that even if hostilities were to end, Russia would likely begin preparing for future conflicts immediately.
“It’s a fact, I think,” Rutte said when asked whether a stable cease-fire would increase risks for NATO. He added that it’s less clear if the Kremlin can continue growing its war machine while the war against Ukraine continues.
The secretary warned that Russia could pose a real threat to NATO members over the next five years.
“Russia could be ready to use military force against NATO within five years,” he said.
He noted that Russia has established close military ties with China, North Korea, and Iran. All three nations are actively expanding their arsenals and military capabilities.
In March, German intelligence reported that Russian dictator Vladimir Putin is preparing for a large-scale war with NATO by the end of the decade.
The military war may be swinging in our favor, but the information war continues.
