US refuses to provide air to cover if Europe deploys to Ukraine — report
The United States has declined to provide air defense support for the “deterrence forces” that the UK and France plan to deploy in Ukraine after a ceasefire is reached, Bloomberg reported on June 4.
Citing officials familiar with the matter, the report stated that UK PM Keir Starmer insists U.S. involvement is key to deterring Russia from violating any potential ceasefire agreement.
Sources said European allies concluded during discussions with U.S. officials that President Donald Trump would not offer the necessary guarantees to support the Europe-led “coalition of the willing.” Journalists noted that the U.S. refusal to provide the expected support highlights deep divisions among Western allies over how to deter Moscow from resuming the war after a truce.
According to the report, London and Paris still hope the United States will continue supplying intelligence and monitoring the Ukraine-Russia border.
The report added that European allies have reexamined their deterrence strategy, now favoring a mix of Ukrainian forces, allied training, European troops and aircraft deployed on NATO’s eastern flank, and patrols in the Black Sea to deter further Russian aggression.
