US Embassy warns of elevated Russian missile attack threat
The U.S. Embassy in Kyiv said on May 9 it received intelligence that Russia may launch a “significant air attack” at any moment in the next several days, advising U.S. citizens to take shelter if an air alert is issued.
“The U.S. Embassy in Kyiv has received information concerning a potentially significant air attack that may occur at any time over the next several days,” the statement said.
“The Embassy, as always, recommends U.S. citizens be prepared to immediately shelter in the event an air alert is announced.”
A similar warning was issued on Nov. 20, 2024, one day before Russia struck Dnipro with an Oreshnik intermediate-range ballistic missile (IRBM).
Several Ukrainian outlets subsequently reported Russia is closing airspace around its military testing site Kapustin Yar—the launch site for Oreshnik IRBMs. According to a NOTAM alert, the airspace will be closed between 6:00 a.m. on May 12 and 6:00 a.m., May 13.
By planning another IRBM strike, the Kremlin may be attempting to disrupt a joint U.S.–European plan for a 30-day ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia, which, according to a report by Reuters, could be announced this weekend.
