The administration of Abkhazia's self-proclaimed leader, under pressure from mass protests, is preparing to withdraw a draft law from parliament that would ratify an investment agreement with Russia, according to the Russian state media outlet TASS on Nov. 15.

Protests have erupted in Abkhazia's capital, Sukhum, over a proposed investment agreement with Russia, prompting the administration of self-proclaimed leader Aslan Bzhania to withdraw the draft law from parliamentary consideration in an effort to stabilize the situation.

Demonstrators, who began gathering on Nov. 11, oppose the deal's provisions allowing Russian companies access to land, tax holidays, and other economic privileges, which critics say would deepen Russian control over Oblast.

Clashes intensified as protesters surrounded government buildings, leading to detentions, roadblocks, and the use of tear gas by security forces.

Abkhazia, a self-proclaimed republic supported by Russia but largely unrecognized internationally, relies heavily on Russian financial aid.
