Ukraine did not inform the United States in advance about the SBU’s large-scale special operation known as “Cobweb,” which targeted Russian strategic aviation.
"It seems the initial reporting by American media was not entirely accurate — we did not keep the U.S. informed about this SBU operation," the source said. "I don’t claim to have insight into every U.S. government agency, but that much is clear."
The source noted that some American politicians view Ukraine's actions in this context as bold — perhaps even reckless — but also with a degree of admiration.
"Part of the U.S. political class sees Ukraine as an impudent country after such attacks, but also with a certain fear," they said. "This fear existed during the previous U.S. administration as well. Both President [Joe] Biden and National Security Advisor [Jake] Sullivan were, and are, cautious about provoking a nuclear power like Russia."
The source described the dominant reaction in Washington as “a mixture of respect and fear” — a recognition that Ukraine is willing to carry out daring operations against a nuclear state, while also acknowledging that Ukraine is increasingly acting on its own terms.
"That’s both respect and a kind of unease — they don’t know what to expect from us. I’ve spoken with congressional advisers and analysts connected to the State Department and other U.S. agencies. They all admit: our actions are difficult to predict, let alone control."
The source added that there remains a desire within some parts of the U.S. political establishment to reach an understanding with Russia.
"This is evident in both the Biden administration and in President Donald Trump’s approach. Ukraine, however, is charting its own path and independently planning operations. That confuses the geopolitical maps — like the ones Trump once showed President [Volodymyr] Zelenskyy in the White House."
