Ukraine’s state oil and gas company Naftogaz Group commissioned a new exploratory well with a daily production rate of 150,000 cubic meters of gas, the company’s press service reported on Dec. 23.

The well, which has a depth of 5,400 meters, is part of Naftogaz's strategic efforts to increase domestic gas production. Construction of the site for the next exploratory well on the same field has already begun.

"Increasing gas production is of strategic importance for the energy security of our country under wartime conditions," said Roman Chumak, who is temporarily acting as the Chairman of the Board of Naftogaz Ukraine.

Over the first 11 months of 2024, Ukraine’s largest gas producer UkrGasVydobuvannya and state oil company Ukrnafta, both part of the Naftogaz Group, produced over 13.5 billion cubic meters of gas.

The Ukrainian parliament appointed Oleksiy Chernyshov as the Vice Prime Minister and Minister of National Unity on Dec. 3. Chernyshov previously served as the Chairman of the Board of Naftogaz since November 2022.

The Supervisory Board of Naftogaz appointed Roman Chumak as the acting Chairman of the Board. Chumak previously served as a member of the Board and Financial Director of Naftogaz.

In September, Chernyshov announced that Ukraine plans to rely solely on domestically produced gas for the upcoming winter.

In 2023, UkrGasVydobuvannya produced 13.5 billion cubic meters of gas, while Ukrnafta produced 1.1 billion cubic meters.
