Russia's strike on Kyiv was the most massive ballistic missile attack of the full-scale war, Ukraine's parliament said.
An NV journalist documented the aftermath of the strikes at one location in the capital's Solomyanskyi district.
According to the Air Force, Russian forces attacked Ukraine with 125 drones and 41 air- and ground-launched missiles of various types overnight. Radar units tracked 166 aerial weapons in total. As of 8:30 a.m., air defenses shot down or suppressed 126 targets — 18 missiles and 108 drones, including 17 Iskander-M/Zircon/S-400 missiles, one Kh-59/69 guided air missile and 108 enemy drones.
Ukraine's State Emergency Service said the number of people injured in Kyiv had risen to 15 as cleanup efforts continued.
Rescuers were working to contain fires in the Shevchenkivskyi district, where blazes broke out in non-residential buildings and open areas, and in the Solomyanskyi district at the site of a damaged five-story apartment building. Fires in the Desnianskyi district and at one location in Solomyanskyi were fully extinguished.
A video was released showing the aftermath of a direct hit on an underground pedestrian crossing near the Lukyanivska metro station.
The Kyiv City Military Administration said the station's above-ground vestibule was damaged by the blast wave and remains temporarily closed; trains on the green line pass through the station without stopping.
"Metro workers are already addressing the damage to ensure the escalators and passenger systems are operational," the city administration said. “We will provide additional updates on the resumption of normal metro service.”
Reuters published photos of the aftermath of the overnight attack on Kyiv.
By early morning, the death toll stood at one and the number of injured in Kyiv had reached eight, according to the State Emergency Service, before later rising to 15. Emergency responders reported strikes and fires across five districts of the capital:
- In the Solomyanskyi district, firefighters battled a blaze at an office building; fires at a residential building and a non-residential building were extinguished. A nine-story apartment building was also damaged, and a separate nonresidential building caught fire.
- In the Shevchenkivskyi district, a fire broke out in a three-story building covering roughly 400 square meters, and more than 10 parked cars were burned. Windows were blown out in a nearby 25-story apartment building. One person was found dead. Rescuers worked to free people trapped by debris.
- In the Sviatoshynskyi district, a fire on the roof of a private home was extinguished; four residents were rescued.
- In the Desnianskyi district, fires broke out at two non-residential buildings and were contained; falling debris also struck a non-residential area and set vehicles on fire.
- In the Dniprovskyi district, vehicles, a non-residential building, and a four-story dormitory caught fire; smoke was also reported near a shopping center.
Kyiv Mayor Vitaliy Klitschko, describing the strike's aftermath, said debris also fell near a residential building in the Solomyanskyi district at a separate address, damaging windows; one person was rescued from the second floor. In the Sviatoshynskyi district, a report of a strike on a private home did not result in a confirmed fire.
Russia previously struck Kyiv with ballistic missiles on July 16, when falling debris and damage were reported in the Darnytskyi and Sviatoshynskyi districts.
Sunday's attack marked the sixth ballistic strike on the Ukrainian capital in July; Russia also struck Kyiv with ballistic missiles on July 2, 6, 8, 11, and 14.
